It is a time where individuals are presented with new experiences and opportunities to achieve professional success. It is also a time, when individuals become involved in trying to understand all aspects of reviewing new and existing homes and applying national building codes, housing standards, working for Band or Tribal Councils and dealing with First Nations housing policies. FNNBOA’s mentorship program was established to help individuals develop and provide support. FNNBOA has established a program where experienced building officers can counsel and provide individuals with the required support. These mentors can provide individuals with insights into the building officer’s sector, including unspoken rules, politics, and nuances, while providing individuals with perspectives and solutions to errors that may have been caused by an individual’s inexperience or naiveté. Finally, the Mentor can help to develop the careers of individuals and help to open the doors to other opportunities. Definition of Mentorship Mentorship means different things to different people. In this case, mentorship is a relationship between two individuals, in which the more experienced, teaches a less knowledgeable individual with the goal of providing the inexperienced person with an experienced partner to guide and nurture their development. Objectives of Mentorship Program The objectives of FNNBOA’s mentorship program are as follows: To promote the personal and professional well being of the new apprentice or building officer To develop the knowledge, skills and competencies needed by apprentices or building officers to be successful To provide an opportunity for analysis of their skills and knowledge through coaching from mentor building resource officers To develop knowledge and skills of mentoring in experienced building officers To improve the skill sets of both the protégé and the mentor. Download the Mentorship Program: Policies and Applications document (308k PDF) Internship Program Overview The Internship program was developed to recruit Aboriginal youth and others to the profession of inspecting new and existing homes in Aboriginal and First Nations communities. The mission of the program is to train individuals to become certified as a Building Officer - Level One. The internship program is competency-based designed to provide training and learning experiences that will equip the individual with the knowledge, skills and attitude to become a successful building officer. The individual’s training will consists mainly of on-the-job training under the supervisions of a certified inspector or an individual that has been recognized by FNNBOA as understanding the occupation. Individuals in the internship program will continue to take classroom instruction to ensure they have achieved all minimum skills and competencies. The internship program requires a high degree of responsibility. To graduate from the internship program with the required skills, knowledge and competencies usually takes 2 to 3 years, with many hours of training along the way. It can also take lesser time depending on your existing skills and knowledge. Upon registering for the Internship program and paying your fees to FNNBOA, you will be provided with a workbook that outlines the nature of the work to be completed. This work is based on the national occupational standards for building officer. Admission to the Internship Program is very simple: Complete and submit the Application for Internship (PDF) Mail it to FNNBOA along with the payment of $50.00. Once received the trainee is contacted by one of the regional FNNBOA representatives. You will also be mailed a workbook.
