First Nation Governance and the Authority Having Jurisdiction

December 10, 2025
Delta Hotels Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Councils are the Authority of Jurisdiction (AHJ) and as the governance bodies for their communities, they are responsible to ensure building codes and standards are established for their communities.

The conference aims are to provide an overview on the legal matters and the fiduciary duties associated with AHJ:

  • the application of AHJ off reserve

  • a contractor’s view on the AHJ

  • AHJ and the construction of homes and prefabs

  • and impact on housing managers and staff

The conference is a follow up to the first AHJ held in Moncton in 2024. Given the interests in this topic, FNNBOA decided to hold a one-day event open to all First Nations.
